Gemotions

Sarah watched her mother, a teacher, as she greeted her friends and colleagues. The time had come for her to retire, and while everyone was happy, Sarah felt a little sad. She knew how much joy her mother took from teaching.

She took a deep breath, and stood before everyone. She talked about the joy her mother felt when students finally grasped concepts, her boundless energy. She described all the years of lesson plans, grading papers, and after-school clubs. Sarah knew the job had defined her mother, and also provided her with the ability to give to others.

When she finished, her mother came forward, and held her hand. There was nothing more that needed to be said. The gesture was all they both needed.
