John felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He saw his own reflection in the darkened computer screen, and he couldn't help but notice how weary he looked. His shoulders slumped as he reread the email, the stark words echoing in the sudden quiet of the office.

He thought of Carol, the secretary, who always knew where to find things. She had worked here for 30 years and had seen every company announcement. He wondered how she was taking it.

He went to her office, knocked gently, and offered to make her a coffee. He had to say something. The words were difficult. He could not find the right ones.
