Gemotions

The fluorescent lights flickered erratically, casting the interior of the elevator in a strobe-like effect. I was aware that I was starting to feel claustrophobic, but my focus was on Lisa. She had quietly told me about her upcoming surgery, and I knew how nervous she was.

She was hugging herself, and I saw her take a few deep breaths, trying to control her anxiety.

I started talking to her about anything to help her. “Hey,” I said, “I think I have a book in my bag, if you want me to read something out loud?” Her answer was a small nod.
