A chill snaked up Maya’s spine as Professor Davies announced his departure. He stood at the front of the seminar room, his usual jovial expression replaced by a tight-lipped seriousness. The news hit her like a physical blow. Her notes blurred.

She had to focus. She clenched her fists beneath the table, the knuckles turning white. His research, his guidance, it all felt so foundational to her own work. The rug was being pulled out from under her.

Later, she found him in his office, packing. He looked tired. She stammered out a question, “Will… will you still be around to see me finish my thesis?” Her voice cracked at the end. He offered her a small, reassuring smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.
