Gemotions

As I saw the email appear on my screen, I knew the news. I had been hoping for the promotion but knew it was between myself and Sarah, and that she wanted it as much as I did. As I watched her walk towards her desk, a strange ache washed over me.

We had worked together on so many projects, late nights, early mornings, celebrating successes and commiserating over failures. I knew her family, her ambitions, her dreams.

I knew how much this meant to her. I imagined the joy, the relief. I swallowed hard and closed my eyes.

When I opened them, I took a step toward her, the words stuck in my throat.
