"This can't be real," Amelia whispered, her voice barely audible. The lawyer's words, still echoing in her ears, were a harsh blow. Her father, a man she'd idealized, had another daughter, now a teenager, named Chloe.

She looked at the crumpled adoption papers, the legal jargon a blur, and her stomach lurched. Her father had died two years ago. How could he have kept this from her?

She had Chloe's contact information. Amelia found herself dialing the number. When a hesitant voice answered, she held her breath. "Hi, Chloe," she began, the words sounding foreign even to her own ears. "My name is Amelia."
