Sarah watched David across the crowded coffee shop. His face, usually animated, was drawn. She knew the project, the one he’d dedicated the last year to, the one she'd poured her own energy into. His face seemed to crumple when he saw her laptop screen, its own identical project file, open.

She almost didn’t want to meet his eyes. Her hand tightened around the ceramic mug. The warmth offered a small comfort to her chilled fingers.

She gathered her belongings, but before she could escape, he was there. He looked smaller, somehow, his usual confidence gone.

“I…I’m so sorry,” she stammered, feeling a pang of… something.
