The blaring television, the source of the incessant noise, was emanating from the apartment upstairs. Maria imagined Mrs. Evans, usually meticulous and quiet, struggling to concentrate on her book.

Maria’s own head throbbed. She found herself imagining the effect of the sound on her neighbor. She knew Mrs. Evans was preparing for an important competition.

She made a decision and reached for the phone. It felt like she was the only person who would do anything about it. She would try to help the older woman. She had a sudden strong urge to do something.
