Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows of Mrs. Gable’s small, tidy bungalow. Martha, peering from her own kitchen, saw the chauffeur-driven limousine pull up across the street. Then, Mrs. Gable emerged, bundled in an expensive, hooded coat, her face hidden from the downpour. Martha watched, her hands clenching at the sight of the woman struggling with a leaking grocery bag, the wet paper threatening to disintegrate. It was then, the glint of the expensive watch and the diamond ring, that Martha fully understood the contrast.

Later, Martha found herself instinctively baking a batch of cookies. The scent of warm vanilla filled her kitchen. She arranged them carefully in a tin and, clutching it, walked across the street. Mrs. Gable answered the door, her smile hesitant. Martha simply offered the cookies, saying, "Thought you might enjoy a little something sweet on a day like this."
