He watched the little girl, Lily, fidget behind her father, Mr. Henderson. The man was awkwardly gesturing towards the edge of his property, his face a mixture of hope and embarrassment. "We… we're trying to grow some food," Mr. Henderson mumbled, his eyes darting around the yard.

A pang of understanding struck David. He remembered his own childhood, the lean times. The thought of a child going hungry was… difficult. He pushed back the impulse to be annoyed, to protect his already limited space. "Absolutely," he said, forcing a smile. "You can have as much space as you need. I have tools you can borrow too." He gestured towards his shed.
