The vibrant colors of the synagogue felt like a mockery. This was the place where they had celebrated their shared heritage for generations. Now, her brother was telling her that he was becoming a Christian. Her mother’s face was ashen, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. The air in the room felt thick, heavy with unspoken accusations.

She clutched her prayer book, the familiar Hebrew words offering no solace. Her throat felt tight, as if something was lodged there, preventing her from speaking. She found herself staring at the stained-glass windows, the images of the prophets seeming to mock her. The room began to spin.

"But… why, David?" she finally managed to ask, her voice trembling.
