He stared at the package, a lump forming in his throat. It felt like an unwelcome visitor, a reminder of all the things he was trying to forget. It was addressed to a "Ms. Evelyn Reed." His predecessor. He hated the thought of people knowing too much about his private life, but now, he was almost certain something about the package would intrude.

He felt a sudden heat rising in his face. He picked up the package. It felt surprisingly light. He brought it to the kitchen table, the silence in the apartment amplifying the pounding in his ears. He was nervous about whatever secrets this might contain.

The package contained a single, handwritten letter. Addressed to Evelyn, it was very intimate. He felt like he shouldn't read it. He did, anyway. He realized he was not alone in his pain.
