He’d known, of course. He'd sensed the shift, the tightening of the screws. The eviction notice just made it real. Now, it was a physical thing he could touch. The words jumped out at him, each syllable a blow.

His gaze flickered around the small room. He walked over to the window and stared out at the street below. He was acutely aware of every creak of the floorboards, every drip from the leaky faucet.

The familiar hum of the refrigerator seemed suddenly malicious, a constant reminder of the life he was about to lose. He turned away from the window, his chest tight.
