The landlady’s face swam before Emily’s eyes. She replayed the conversation, the curt tone, the cold finality. A shiver ran down her spine, leaving her skin goosefleshed. She wrapped her arms around herself.

She took a shaky breath, then another. The apartment, which had always felt cozy, suddenly felt stark and empty. She ran her hand over the smooth surface of the dining table, a relic of happier times.
