“What’s this supposed to be?” Maria asked, her voice sharp. She glared at the metal box sitting on her kitchen table. The discovery of it had sent a shiver through her. She ran her hand through her hair, the movement jerky and impatient.

She didn't know how the time capsule had come to be in her basement. She didn't know why she was here, and felt like she was trapped by some invisible force. She felt like something was wrong. She just wanted to go back to sleep.

She lifted the lid and, inside, was a simple, unfinished wooden doll. It stared back at her with blank, button eyes. Maria shivered, slamming the lid back down. She needed to be alone. She needed to get away.
