He felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead, a chilling cascade that soaked his shirt. The oppressive silence of the shop pressed in on him, amplifying the frantic rhythm of his heart. Every shadow seemed to shift, watching, waiting. He swallowed hard, trying to dislodge the lump in his throat.

His gaze darted around the shop, seeking an escape, any possible route. The ring. It was there, behind that glass, a final, cruel twist of fate. He tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat, a strangled whisper barely audible above the buzzing fluorescent lights.
