Gemotions

The email sat in the inbox, mocking her. She hadn't dared open it all day, the subject line a malevolent whisper: "Scholarship Application Update." Her fingers, usually steady from years of piano practice, trembled as she clicked. The words swam before her eyes: "We regret to inform you…" A wave of heat washed over her, making her lightheaded. She reread the paragraph, each word a hammer blow.

Her breath hitched in her chest. The small, cluttered room, her sanctuary, suddenly felt like a cage. She scrambled to her feet, pacing the worn rug, her hands clasped tightly. The faint scent of old books and dried flowers in the air did nothing to calm the chaos brewing inside her. The future, once a brightly lit path, had just dissolved into shadows.

"No," she whispered, the sound barely audible. The weight of her parents’ expectations, the hours spent studying, the dreams she had carefully cultivated, all threatened to collapse into dust. She sank to the floor, her back against the cool wall, and felt the first prickle of tears at the corners of her eyes.
