The room spun. My vision blurred as I saw his familiar face. A cold wave washed over me, numbing my limbs. I felt the blood drain from my face. I struggled to maintain any control, any semblance of calm.

I needed to get away, to escape this moment. I pushed past a table, knocking over a champagne flute in my haste. The noise of the shattering glass barely registered. My mind raced, trying to find a way out of this social minefield.
