He’d been dreaming, a hazy landscape of half-formed thoughts and anxieties. Then the abrupt sound of the tow truck's engine ripped him from his slumber. John bolted upright in bed, heart leaping into his throat.

He scrambled out of bed, ignoring the tangled sheets and the lingering sleep in his eyes. He stumbled toward the window, his bare feet slapping against the cold floorboards.

He saw the flashing lights, the looming bulk of the truck. His car, his lifeline, was being hoisted into the air. He wanted to scream, to run, to do anything to stop it, but he was frozen, rooted to the spot.
