I felt a cold dread creep into my bones as I pushed the front door open. My brother, Ethan, was buzzing with energy, already planning the remodel. I, on the other hand, just wanted to turn around and leave.

The house seemed to exhale, releasing a musty odor that made me wrinkle my nose. Every shadow seemed to deepen, every sound seemed amplified. My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird.

I had to get out. I needed air. I muttered some excuse about checking the car, and practically ran out the front door, leaving Ethan to his plans.
