The old house loomed before them, its windows like vacant eyes. Amelia felt a cold wave wash over her, a sudden, inexplicable sense of foreboding. Her brother, Thomas, was already fishing out the keys, a careless smile on his face.

The key turned in the lock with a groan, a sound that seemed to amplify the oppressive silence. Amelia found herself holding her breath, her chest tightening. The interior was dark and still, and the air was thick with the scent of dust and something else, something she couldn’t quite place.

She felt a desperate urge to flee, to escape the suffocating presence of the house. She took a step back, then another, her gaze darting around the room, searching for a sign, a reason to stay. She couldn't find one.
