“Well, this is just great,” he muttered, staring at the brown paper-wrapped parcel. It was addressed to "Theodore Vance," the name of the man who’d been evicted from this house a month ago. He hadn't known the man, but he'd heard the rumors.

He slowly reached out, as if touching a venomous snake. His fingertips brushed the coarse paper. The air felt charged, expectant. The house had felt empty and silent when he moved in, but now, the shadows seemed to twist and reform into ominous shapes.

He backed away, his gaze darting around the room, as if searching for an escape. He knew he shouldn't touch it. But he also knew he had to. The silence in the house grew deafening.
