The foreman’s voice boomed across the empty lot, and the sudden noise made him jump. The house was his, once. It was everything. It was home.

His palms were slick with sweat. He kept running his hands through his hair, as though trying to smooth away the tension that was building within him.

He looked at the machine. It looked like a monster. It was going to swallow the building whole, piece by piece. His insides felt like they were twisting, tearing.

He remembered the birthday parties, the Christmas mornings, the whispered secrets in the attic. He remembered his parents. His grandparents. All now just memories waiting to be buried.

He turned and started walking away, unable to watch the destruction.
