He hadn't eaten. He hadn't slept. He hadn't even showered. He stood frozen on the sidewalk. His eyes darted around, searching for a sign, a miracle, anything that would stop the inevitable.

He found himself constantly rubbing the back of his neck, trying to soothe the tension. Every sound, every movement, amplified his sense of impending doom.

He watched the crew members, their faces impassive, their movements efficient and deliberate. They were just doing their job. He couldn't blame them.

He closed his eyes, and a single tear escaped, tracing a path down his cheek. He had failed. He could not protect this.
