The world seemed to shrink around her. Maria’s breath hitched in her throat as she scrolled through the pictures. Her daughter, Sofia, posing in unfamiliar settings, with unfamiliar people. She felt a cold sweat prickle her skin.

She wanted to call her husband, to share the weight of this sudden dread. But she also wanted to understand on her own. The fear of what was waiting in the shadows threatened to consume her.

She picked up her phone and dialed the number, but quickly pressed the end button. She looked at the door and considered barging in to demand answers. She couldn't do it. Not yet.
