She'd stumbled into the open mic night almost by accident. The stage lights were blinding, but the first chords were like a physical blow. It was her melody, her lyrics, but rendered in a way that felt alien.

Her chest constricted. She felt a pressure in her head, as if her skull was tightening. Her fingers began to tap a frantic rhythm on her knee. The performer's eyes met hers.

She abruptly turned and walked out. The cool night air offered no comfort. She wanted to scream, to lash out. But all she could do was walk, walk fast and far away.
