The photographs were like a punch to the gut. The story they told shattered everything. The stern, unyielding grandfather was grinning at a woman that was not his wife. A cold wave swept over Thomas. He swallowed hard, trying to keep his composure. He felt a sudden, choking sensation.

His hands clenched into fists. He had to breathe; he had to get out. He slammed the album shut, the sound echoing through the empty house. Every shadow seemed to lengthen, to twist into something menacing. He needed to get away, to escape the weight of the new reality.
