He stared at the document, the words blurring before his eyes. The letter, meticulously typed and signed in a confident hand, belonged to his uncle. A letter of repudiation, a casting off. A shadow fell across the room, mimicking the one in his chest. A sense of unease, bordering on dread, consumed him.

His hands shook as he set down the letter. The air was thick, heavy, as though a storm was approaching. He felt a sudden, desperate urge to flee, to be anywhere but here. Every surface in the room seemed to stare at him. The very walls seemed to be closing in.
