I always thought the couple next door were struggling. The worn furniture, the patched-up car. Then, I saw the private security detail escorting them into a gated community. I felt a chill run down my spine.

My stomach twisted into a knot. I wanted to vomit. The world tilted on its axis, and everything familiar felt…foreign. I didn’t know what to do.

I sat in my chair, staring out the window, unable to move. Every passing car, every rustle of leaves, sounded like a threat. The quiet of the street felt like a trap, and I was sure I was its prey.
