"Just a little savings," he said, always downplaying his finances. He was a humble man. Then, I saw the safe being loaded into his moving truck. It was massive.

I froze, paralyzed. My breath came in short, shallow gasps. My vision blurred. I wanted to run, to escape the sight, to erase the memory, but my feet were rooted to the spot.

Later, I huddled in a corner, whispering reassurances to myself. Every shadow in the room seemed to move, every sound amplified. I was convinced someone was out there, watching me, and the thought was utterly consuming.
