The silence in the student center was broken only by the quiet sobs of a few students and the whirring of the vending machine. Mark felt a tremor run through his limbs. His body felt heavy, as if gravity had suddenly increased. He was unable to move.

He pictured his future, the carefully crafted path he'd envisioned for himself. The internships, the career he’d dreamed of—now, it all seemed to be slipping through his fingers. He felt a desperate urge to clutch at something, anything, to hold onto some semblance of stability.

He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging his glasses, letting them fall. The world around him went slightly blurry, yet the news was sharply etched in his mind. He wanted to shout, scream, break something. He wanted to go back to when things were normal.
