"So, what do you think?" The question, delivered with a smile, was a loaded gun. John's legs felt like lead, rooted to the spot. His hands trembled so violently he had to clench them to prevent them from shaking visibly. He looked towards the property line, the familiar shape of the tree suddenly alien and menacing.

The blood drained from his face, leaving him feeling lightheaded. He felt a primal urge to protect himself, to shield himself from the unknown. He couldn’t speak, the words stuck in his throat like a bitter pill. He found himself studying the pattern of the brick walkway, as if the intricate design held the answer.

He could feel his heart pounding against his ribs, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the turmoil inside. The world seemed to shrink, closing in around him. He felt exposed, vulnerable, and utterly alone.
