The casual tone of his voice was like a knife twisting in her gut. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, as if every nerve ending was exposed. The request, delivered with such apparent ease, felt like a summons to a nightmare.

She clutched her arms around herself, trying to ward off the cold that had suddenly enveloped her. Her eyes darted around the yard, searching for an escape, for a safe haven. The birdsong, once a comfort, now seemed to taunt her with its innocence.
