Gemotions

A cold sweat slicked Amelia’s palms as she stared at the doctor. The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. “Fibrous Dysplasia Type 3, bilateral, advanced stage.” The doctor, a kind woman with tired eyes, repeated the diagnosis, as if to make sure Amelia had absorbed the information. Amelia could only manage a choked, “But…but how?” The weight of the unknown pressed down on her chest, making it hard to breathe. Her vision swam as the doctor explained the rare condition, the limited treatment options. Amelia’s hands trembled so violently she had to clasp them together to stop them from shaking.

The doctor, sensing her distress, suggested a support group. Amelia, desperate for any semblance of control, agreed. Maybe others understood this bewildering, frightening situation better than she did. She would be meeting other sufferers.

The meeting room was sterile, the air thick with unspoken anxieties. Amelia sat in the back, hugging her knees, avoiding eye contact. A woman with a distinctive limp approached, extending a hand. "I’m Sarah. I was diagnosed five years ago." Sarah's smile was warm, but Amelia could feel her own insides churning like a tempest.
