"Oh, aren't they lovely?" her neighbor gushed, peering over the fence. The delivery person had just left, leaving a mass of lavender and purple blooms on the porch. No card. A chill ran through Maya. She forced a smile.

She hurried inside, slamming the door. Her heart hammered against her chest. She checked the locks, then peered through the peephole, her breath catching in her throat. The street was empty.

She retreated back into the house, her gaze darting around the living room. Everything looked normal, but it didn't *feel* normal. The flowers sat on the porch, a vibrant, silent threat. She had to do something.
