He’d left the manuscript open on the coffee table. James. His novel. About *them*. A wave of nausea, sharp and sudden, threatened to overwhelm her. Her breath hitched. She felt a constriction in her throat, making it difficult to even breathe properly. The words on the page seemed to vibrate, blurring at the edges.

She fumbled for the phone, her hands clumsy. Each sentence was a blow, a disorienting echo of her own insecurities. The way he described her laugh… the things he imagined she thought… the secrets he *knew*… She felt a prickling sensation all over, as if invisible insects were crawling on her skin. She had to get out.
