The phone vibrated in her hand. Sarah stared at the screen, unable to answer. It was her brother, calling to offer financial help, a suggestion she'd been dreading. The notice had been taped to her door for two days, and the pressure had become a constant weight on her chest.

She curled up on her sofa, pulling her knees to her chest. The walls of her apartment seemed to close in on her. The sunlight streaming through the window felt intrusive, mocking.
