“I understand,” I managed, my voice sounding steadier than I felt. My mother’s face, usually etched with worry, now radiated a serenity I hadn’t witnessed before. Her announcement was a surprise, but the effect on her was undeniable.

My hands felt light, almost weightless. I reached across the table and squeezed hers. It was all I could do. Tears began to well up, but they were definitely not from sadness.

I knew I needed to make something for her. A cake. A gift. And definitely a hug.
