Gemotions

“Delayed until further notice.” The automated voice was robotic, devoid of any empathy. My brother’s graduation. My flight was going to be the reason I didn’t see him receive his diploma. I felt the familiar weight of guilt settle on my shoulders.

I was contemplating just renting a car and driving when I saw an elderly man struggling with a heavy suitcase. Without a word, I rushed over and helped him. He struggled to catch his breath and then started telling me about his own graduation. He also told me about the loss of his wife and how he was headed back to see his grandson. I was reminded of my brother. I spent the next several hours helping him and listening to his stories. It felt good to provide some service.
