Gemotions

The aroma of roses and lilies filled the air. Seeing David, she braced herself. It had been years, but the sting of their breakup still had the capacity to cause pain. However, as he walked towards her, a polite smile on his face, the sharp edges of that pain softened.

He extended his hand, "Congratulations to the happy couple." His voice was steady, calm. She realized she felt… relieved. The animosity she had anticipated simply wasn't there.

They found themselves at a table near the dance floor. He was engaged now, she learned. He spoke of his future wife with genuine affection. She found herself truly happy for him, and for herself. It was over, the ache, the what-ifs. And she was free.
