The ballroom glittered with fairy lights. As soon as I saw him, my heart started thudding a rapid tempo. It had been such a complicated time after our split. But, seeing him now, across the room at Emily and Tom’s wedding, it was… fine. He looked healthy, happy, even.

Later, during the buffet, we ended up side-by-side in the food queue. "Emily looks stunning," I said, trying to keep my voice neutral. He agreed, adding a comment about the incredible catering. The conversation, effortless, flowed.

He asked about my new job, and I enthusiastically described my recent successes. When he smiled, I felt a warmth spread through my chest, like the sun. I realised the years of resentment were gone. The hurt. All gone. It felt… liberating.
