He'd been unusually distant lately, and the phone, always clutched close, only added to her unease. The phone rang while he was in the shower. She looked, her hand hovering, and then picked it up. A woman’s voice, a familiar voice, she realized in a flash of recognition. She hung up instantly, a tremor running through her. He emerged from the bathroom, humming. He was smiling. She met his gaze, and she felt a wave of peacefulness wash over her. She knew in that instant, with that smile, that it didn't matter. She made a decision right there. He deserved her best.
