The musty scent of cedar chips and aged cotton filled Amelia’s nostrils as she lifted the bear from the dusty card table. Its button eyes, once gleaming, were now dulled with time, and a patch of fur was missing from its left ear. It was Barnaby. Amelia’s fingers, trembling slightly, traced the worn seams.

A wave of warmth blossomed in her chest, chasing away the chill of the early morning air. She paid the elderly woman without haggling, an unusual impulse for Amelia, who usually delighted in the thrill of a bargain.

Back in her car, the old bear sat propped against the passenger seat. Amelia found herself smiling, humming a tune she hadn't thought about in decades. The drive home felt shorter than usual, the familiar landscape suddenly rendered vibrant, alive.
