The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the small apartment, a familiar comfort. Liam hummed as he flipped pancakes, a genuine smile playing on his lips. He glanced at the empty chair across the kitchen table. Maya had stormed off hours ago, her face tight with disapproval at his suggestion of adopting a kitten from the local shelter.

He poured himself a glass of orange juice. The silence, usually filled with Maya’s witty banter, felt unusually heavy. Nevertheless, the warmth spreading through his chest made him sigh contentedly. He couldn't help but feel incredibly fortunate for the life he had. A good job, a cozy home, and a best friend, even if they were momentarily at odds.

Liam grabbed his phone to text Maya, hoping to smooth things over. Maybe a small peace offering would work. He had a great life, and he was happy to share it.
