Gemotions

The rejection letter, crisp and official, lay on the kitchen table. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Amelia picked up the letter, traced the embossed logo of "Veridian Books" with a fingertip, and then, slowly, smiled.

She poured herself a mug of chamomile tea, its warmth a comfort against the chill of the morning. Her shoulders, usually hunched with the weight of expectation, felt loose and relaxed. She walked to the garden, the dew-kissed grass cool beneath her bare feet, and began pulling weeds. The soil smelled rich and fertile.

The robin on the bird feeder chirped a cheerful song. She felt, for the first time in months, that the world was unfolding just right.
