The usual lunchtime chatter at the breakroom table had been replaced by a tense silence. The news had broken a few hours ago. Jessica tried to take a deep breath. A sale was announced.

She thought about the flexible hours that allowed her to pick up her kids after school. The company had supported her through thick and thin, and been a great help with the kids. She was glad she had had them.

She glanced at her colleagues, all of them looking worried. She felt a peacefulness she couldn't account for. The future was unknown, but her family was secure, and her life was good. She bit into her sandwich, and felt the flavors bloom.
