The bell above the pawn shop door jingled, a merry sound against the dreary afternoon. Sarah nearly tripped over a stack of dusty guitars, her eyes glued to the display case. There, nestled amongst tarnished silverware and chipped porcelain dolls, was the ring. She knew it instantly. The delicate filigree, the tiny emeralds flanking the central diamond – it was Grandma Elsie’s. A wide grin stretched across her face.

Her breath hitched. She hadn't seen it in years, not since Grandma had passed. Sarah approached the counter, heart hammering against her ribs. The grizzled shopkeeper, a man whose face seemed permanently etched in a frown, finally looked up. "Can I help you, miss?" he rasped.

"Yes," she managed, her voice a little breathless. "About that ring… the one in the case…" She pointed, her finger trembling slightly. She felt a lightness, a buoyancy she hadn't experienced in ages. It was like a weight she hadn't known she was carrying had just vanished.
