My hands were practically vibrating as I watched Mr. Henderson wrestle with the paperwork. He’d finally gotten the permit! A fence! A real, honest-to-goodness fence, right there between our yards. I practically bounced on the balls of my feet, the sun warm on my face. The thought of privacy, of demarcated space, of a safe haven for my prize-winning petunias, sent a delightful shiver down my spine.

He waved the papers at me, a grin plastered across his face. “All good to go, Mary! Think of it – no more stray dogs tearing up your garden!” I could barely contain myself. My voice came out as a squeaky little giggle.

I immediately ran back inside to plan the planting scheme, already imagining vibrant colours against a clean, wooden backdrop. The world felt brighter, possibilities bloomed like spring flowers, and I could already taste the peace that would come.
