Rain lashed against the window as Evelyn trudged back from the grocery store, her mood as gray as the sky. The mail seemed like another chore. But then, tucked amongst the flyers and overdue notices, was a simple white envelope. It bore her name, written in a familiar, yet strangely unfamiliar, hand.

She shut the door, dropping her bags. A wave of… pleasure… washed over her. The card was a handmade collage, colorful and intricate. She had completely forgotten it was her birthday next week. She twirled, imagining the day she'd previously been dreading. She needed to rearrange her schedule. She needed to bake a cake.
