Gemotions

The cardboard box sat on the doorstep, a beacon of promise in the afternoon sun. I knew the name wasn't mine – "Evelyn Hawthorne" – but the anticipation bubbling in my chest was undeniable. My fingers fumbled with the packing tape, peeling it back with a speed I didn’t know I possessed. A rush of air, not from the box itself, but from my lungs, escaped as the flaps gave way.

Inside, nestled in crinkled paper, was a vintage record player, gleaming like a forgotten treasure. My breath hitched. Evelyn, whoever she was, clearly had excellent taste. My smile stretched wide enough to feel the corners of my mouth beginning to ache.

The afternoon vanished as I meticulously set up the player, my movements almost reverent. Then, the first vinyl slipped onto the turntable. The needle dropped. Music, rich and warm, filled the room, and I swayed, lost in a borrowed melody, a silent acknowledgment of the beautiful mistake.
